The Decemberists Top the Billboard 200
In an unseating for the ages, The Decemberists’s country-tinged The King is Dead is this week’s number one album in the country, knocking Cake’s Showroom of Compassion – the lowest-selling number one in SoundScan’s history – from the top spot on the Billboard 200. Colin Meloy and co.’s sixth LP sold 94,000 copies since its January 18 release, a major increase from 2009’s Hazards of Love, which sold 19,000 its first week and peaked at number fourteen on the chart. Billboard notes that 65% of the total sales were digital downloads, which was likely bolstered by Amazon selling the record for only $3.99 on its release date. This is The Decemberists’ first number one album.
