On April 18, Gorillaz will release a physical edition of their newest album, which was produced entirely on an iPad during the American leg of their world tour this past autumn. Aptly named The Fall, the album pays homage to life on the road and all the beauty the U.S. has to offer.
The Gorillaz live band were on the road for a large chunk of last year in support of their acclaimed third LP, Plastic Beach, visiting the United States, Europe, Asia, Australia and New Zealand. Before the jaunt even ended in December, Damon Albarn was ready to drop a brand new album online; fanclub members even had the opportunity to download the entire album on Christmas Day.
Albarn recorded The Fall entirely on an iPad using 20 different apps, all during his spare time. As the titles suggest, U.S. cities inspired the album during the 32-day North American tour. Dubbed a "15 track sonic journal," Albarn attempted to document his journey across the continent. The album was also inspired by virtual bandmate 2D, according to the character himself, who mentions claims that each record so far has been influenced by a differnt one of the four members. "And this one The Fall, is mostly just me," says the cartoon singer, "...something more gentle and just...well...it's just me and an iPad really mucking about...trying out some stuff."
A limited edition 180-gram LP will be released on Record Store Day, April 16, by Parlophone Rocords. The Fall CD and digital download will be available April 18, and can be preordered here. To stream the entire album right now, visit The Fall's official site.
