After a rousing four days at SXSW, Hooray for Earth has gained footing as one of the bands to watch this year. Their new full-length, available May 10, True Loves, offers synth pop beats paired with impossibly catchy tunes. The New York-by-way-of-Boston embarks on a North American tour this June with Architecture in Helinski.
Frontman Noel Heroux wrote, recorded, and produced most of True Loves, follow-up tothe group's first EP Momo also released on Dovecoat Records. The album features bassist Christopher Principe, guitarist/live synth by Gary Benacquista, and enough drumming by Joseph Ciampini to keep a party at full force. The record was mixed by Chris Coady (Blonde Redhead, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, TV on the Radio). Lead single and title-track "True Loves" thumps along neck-snapping drums, awash with blips and synths, and Heroux's soaringly languid vocals.
The band, who is not-so-seriously named after the Nickelodeon cartoon "Invader Zim", according to a recent interview is also decidedly not taking an aim at topics of drugs or disillusionment that have made the genre so popular. Heroux puts his music somewhere between harsh-noise and Enya: "I've really grabbed onto the positive, uplifting feelings in music that get me super psyched, but that can also come from sounds that are daunting and a little scary."
Take an early peak at Hooray for Earth's dance beats and psychedelic video for "Surrounded by Your Friends". (Warning: potential byproduct includes impeding smile.)
