BBC reports that a Sony-owned warehouse in London was burned to the ground early Tuesday morning during the third straight night of violent riots throughout the city. The building was the primary distribution center for PIAS, the U.K.'s largest distributor of independent record labels. There were no injuries as a result of the fire, but the majority of PIAS' inventory is considered lost. This affects the stock of over 150 labels, including Sub Pop, Domino, Secretly Canadian, Jagjaguwar, Thrill Jockey, Vice, Drag City, Warp, Hardly Art, Polyvinyl, and many others.

Beggars Group, which includes Matador, Rough Trade, 4AD, True Panther, XL, Abeano, Too Pure, and Young Turks, released a statement on the Beggars Archive blog stating that its entire U.K. stock is gone. Speaking with Pitchfork earlier today, Beggars chairman Martin Mills said that it would take about ten days to replace CDs and at least three months to replace vinyl; he estimated 750,000 items were destroyed. Smaller labels that had the whole of their stock with PIAS may go under as a result of the destruction, NME reports. Transmission, Loose Music, Sonic Cathedral, Sunday Best, and surely many more have lost all physical copies of their releases.

The U.K.'s Association of Independent Music has issued a statement urging people to support affected labels by making digital purchases.
