Weekend Round-Up - Jeff Mangum, Google v. Piracy, Deerhunter, and more

-Jeff Mangum played a set of ten Neutral Milk Hotel classics to about 75-100 people at The Schoolhouse in Bushwick, Brooklyn on Sunday night. The singer/songwriter’s appearance at the loft show was a surprise, and Ba Da Bing Records’ Ben Goldberg told Pitchfork, “I really can't say what this means in terms of future performances. This was a last minute show, done intentionally without buildup to let it be as simple and easy going as possible. It seems to have gone exactly like that.” You can listen to the back half of Mangum’s set over at International Tapes.

-Tis the season for Gorillaz to post a digital advent calendar on their website. Gifts offered so far include printable masks, desktop wallpaper, and game in which you help 2D defeat a whale. Something new will be posted every day until Christmas. [NME

-Jeff Tweedy opened for Yo La Tengo at Maxwell’s on Friday night, and then hung around to join YLT for about half of their set. The intimate Hoboken, NJ venue is hosting the prolific indie-rockers’ annual eight-night Hanukkah celebration. Mission of Burma had the honors last night, and Bob Weston behind the boards doing. You can catch Tweedy on his own tonight in Tarrtown, NY, tomorrow in D.C., or Wednesday in Charlottesville, VA. [Brooklyn Vegan]

-M.I.A. announced via Twitter on Friday that she’s gearing up to drop a new mixtape on New Year’s Eve. It’s called Vicki Leekx, and it will be “layin bad minds to rest 2010!” So, get ready for that. [Prefix]

-Stereogum posted a stream of “Going Through Hell”, from The Streets’ upcoming final album, Computers and Blues. Mike Skinner recently announced, though, that before the long-awaited last Streets record hits shelves on February 7, we’ll get the recently announced Cyberspace and Reds, which Skinner claims will be “painfully repetitive,” opposed to the “dark and futuristic” vibe of Blues. Skinner seems determined take his decade-strong garage-rap project out with a bang. You can listen to Reds’ “Too Numb” at Stereogum, too.

-Google announced on Thursday that they would be taking some action against piracy. Measures taken include adjustment of the autocomplete feature and the promise to “act on reliable copyright takedown requests within 24 hours.” Read more about the changes over at Music Ally.

-Finally, take a look at some fresh videos below. First, enjoy Deerhunter’s smoke machine-heavy performance of "Helicopter" on Thursday night’s episode of “Conan”. (Yes, O’Brien is wearing jeggings at the end. Apparently the monologue was jegging-themed, because why not?) Beneath that is Tame Impala’s new fish-eye-heavy clip for Innerspeaker’s “Expectation”. Finally, reports surfaced last week that young movie megastar Michael Cera would be playing bass for indie rock megaband Mister Heavenly, which features members of Man Man, Islands, and Modest Mouse and was just signed to Sub Pop last week. By the end of the week, video of Mister Heavenly hit the web. Yes, Cera is there, not hogging the stage and suffering chants of “Paulie Bleeker!” – ugh – but more importantly: Mister Heavenly kind of rules. Give it a listen.
