My small punk rock nerd's brain can't imagine many things cooler than seeing Sonic Youth and Nirvana when they toured Europe together in August 1991, Sonic Youth still riding on their major label debut Goo, and Nirvana, of course, about to unleash Nevermind. Unfortunately, a little American dork like me was probably watching "Barney" or "going to pre-school" instead. But that's where "1991: The Year Punk Broke" comes in handy, the essential early-'90s record of that excursion.

The movie, directed by Dave Markey, had only ever been released on VHS, but it was announced today that it will be coming to DVD this fall, in commemoration of that tour's twentieth anniversary. It focuses on Sonic Youth and Nirvana, but also features Dinosaur Jr., Ramones, Babes in Toyland, Gumball, members of Mudhoney, and more.

This release will include some extra special features, including audio commentary from Markey and Thurston Moore, video of a 2003 panel discussion on the film featuring Markey, Sonic Youth, and J Mascis, and edits of on-stage material. And perhaps most mouth-wateringly cool-sounding is the 42-minute "bonus movie", titled "(This Is Known As) The Blues Scale", which includes more performances by Sonic Youth and Nirvana and, by the looks of these preview clips, plenty of on- and off-stage antics.

It's not so difficult to find "The Year Punk Broke" in chunks online, but having it in a new physical form, especially since we all know your VHS copy wore out years ago, would be nice. Look for it later this year.
