That ink-displaying shirt tug on the cover says it all. As did the crown-wearing, knife playing antics in the music video for "Mayday" from last year's excellent EP Nasty, Brutish and Short. Nashville's Daniel Pujol goes for it, and should you go along for the ride, a good time is basically guaranteed. Less recognized by the masses is the fact that there is a lot going on north of that "Win" tattoo, and south of that crown, in the vicinity of the brain. As evidence, check out some of Pujol's writing when you have a moment, and dig beneath the rollicking garage on the new United States of Being and discover the wry and wicked humor on tracks like "Diy2K", "Reverse Vampire" and "Made of Money". It's ingenious stuff. Some of these are re-workings of tunes that have been in the prolifie Pujol's canon for some time, others newer. And people are diggin' it. To wit:
Consequence of Sound: United States of Being is the appropriate soundtrack to both an existential meltdown and a rowdy, beer-heavy night out-or maybe both at the same time. It’s in this precarious balance that PUJOL has hit a stride that shows no intention of slowing down.
Rolling Stone: Just like the Nashville DIY scene, United States of Being is loud, a little grimy and fun as hell. PUJOL might be growing up fast, but they're having the best time doing it.
Spinner: "Providence," Pujol's latest single of heavenly drama, rocks so hard from the first note that you'll be singing it all day. It's a knack he's had from the start of his career, churning out distortion-heavy tunes full of grit and Route 40 asphalt while exhibiting an intelligence that simply isn't found in rock music today.
Intelligence + balls out rowdy fun. Why wouldn't you want to be part of PUJOL's United States of Being?
