And maybe if I really try to follow my heart / Then I could make a brand new start
--- Girls, "Lust For Life"
From all indications this week, making a brand new start is what Christopher Owens is about to do. In a series of tweets on Monday morning, he managed to blow the minds of anyone that cares about one of the 21st Century's most exceptional bands when he announced that he was leaving Girls, for reasons that, at least for now, will apparently remain his own.
Never mind the fact that Chri55ybaby left plenty of people wondering why he chose to word it as his "leaving" the band rather than the band simply breaking up--likely there are legal justifications for that--can it be that after two breathtaking albums and one EP that Girls is no more? Certainly the band without Owens is tantamount to Bright Eyes without Conor Oberst.
We obviously hope not, and that whatever is at the root of his decision, that there is some room for reconsideration. And if not we wholheartedly wish Chris and JR a huge thanks for a few years of some of the most moving, thrilling music in pop history, and only the best in whatever lies ahead. And we do so by revisiting our conversation with them from September of last year. It's a Face Time Rewind this week: music and conversation with Girls.
