What a story, what a prodigy we have in the farm girl from Wisconsin-turned-indie-sensation Zola Jesus. Not only has Nika Roza Daniliova, at a ripe old 22, turned out some of the more compelling records of the past several years in a string of EP's and albums, but she stepped it up a good deal in terms of profile with last year's terrific Conatus, its hypnotic single "Vessel", synth-pop-tastic "Seeker" and a personal favorite, "Hikikomori"--all of which we talk about this week in Face Time.
In a rather grand, gilded chair in New York's Webster Hall, as her support band for that night, metal lightning rods Liturgy, sound check in the background, Nika chats with me about her year ago move from Wisconsin to LA (her hubby was a factor in that decision), her reflexively cautious nature when it come to the music biz (wise, that), and her abiding love for her label, New York's venerable Sacred Bones. We also get into how she made an exception to her usual no-remixes-of-her-music policy for the one and only David Lynch, who reworked "In Your Nature", her memorable end of 2011 collabo with M83, on his "Intro", and more.
A jaw-dropping talent and more importantly a total charmer of a person, this week's guest on Face Time is Nika Danilova, aka Zola Jesus.
