"It was kind of a cheesy moment," recalled Perfume Genius' Mike Hadreas in our Face Time interview earlier this year, in recalling the first time he played the Put Your Back N 2 It track "Dark Parts" for the woman who inspired it, his mom. "It was very emotional for us. I'm really proud of that song." 

And why wouldn't he be? In its typically understated way, it's a vow of gratitude, love and protection from a son to his mother: "I will take the dark part/ Of your heart into my heart", he sings. Of his relationship to his mom, Hadreas told us, "We’ve always  been really close but maybe not always healthy? We’re a lot less co-dependent, I guess, is the technical term for it. I mean, we’re just more like adults? And I pay my own rent, I’m not mooching off her."

So it was something of a no-brainer that Hadreas' mom herself would appear in the music video for the song, but what a lovely video it is. Playing with the dogs, Scrabble, dancing, tree climbing, even an appearance from Hadreas' boyfriend and musical partner Alan, director Winston Case and DP Sam Heesen have created a "Dark Parts" have created a clip that's an exquisite reflection of this lyrical, heartfelt song.
