"You Broke My Cool" sings Nick Allbrook, although it's hard to imagine much breaking the cool of the young singer of Perth's Pond. In fact, if we thought there was anything to silly lists like the NME's "coolest person" ranking, well, Allbrook would not be a bad candidate. Originally billed in the press as a "Tame Impala side project"--as Allbrook plays bass in that band and Pond gutarist Jay Watson serves as its drummer--in a few short months Pond have managed to begin creating a global name on their own as an oufit somewhere to the flowery, bluesy, druggy, loopier left of Kevin Parker's Tame Impala.

Beard, Wives, Denim is their most recent long-player (though not their first), and it's packed with rowdy psych-pop goodness. The pick of a good lot, for our money, is the rousing "Fantastic Explosion of Time", though the comparatively laid back "You Broke My Cool" will do, as will its decidedly homespun music video. "Shot by the band and their friends" says the label, and that's just how it looks: cavorting in the countryside near Perth, under a blazing sun in a cloudless sky, loving life and --we're gonna go out on a perhaps irresponsible, speculative limb here--enjoying the enhancement of mood-alterers.
