You knew that whatever Redd Kross did as a first video from their long-awaited and excellent new album Researching the Blues that it would be fun. You also probably deduced that it would not be a big budget affair, as DIY is practically in Redd Kross's DNA.
What you might not have figured on from this quintessentially California band would be an homage of sorts to New York's mighty KISS. But Redd Kross' Jeff McDonald, who directed the video along with fimmaker Dave Markey, is a lifelong fan of Gene Simmons and Co., and sure enough the band is decked in quasi-KISS makeup, gold lame jackets and something of an Asian look to them as well. Which works with the backdrop: scenes of Asian neon nightlife signs, much of in Korean, some in Chinese or broken English that can't have been chosen accidentally: "Massage", "Wang". and best of all, "Young Dong Restaurant". Who's gonna say these guys have really "grown up", and who would them to?
They've just turned out, decades into the game, their most exciting record yet, and the first video from it is our NV Music Video of the Day: "Stay Away From Downtown" from the mighty Redd Kross.
