Phil Selway, WIthout Radiohead, Gets "Familial"

While Radiohead is reportedly well underway with another mega release, we have something more subtle here in the form of Familial – in which Philip Selway steps out from behind the kit to fashion a record that in its own way is as quiet and humble as Yorke and Co. can be ambitious and complex. It’s somewhat surprising that given the scope of his outside work over the years, this is Selway’s first solo album, but among his collaborators on the project are musicians he worked with as far back as 2001 on Neil Finn’s “7 Worlds Collide” project: Soul Coughing’s Sebastian Steinberg, and alt-folk vet Lisa Germano. Also on board?  Wilco’s Pat Sansone and Glenn Kotchke.

Hardly surprising then, that the album finds Selway making a move in a folkier direction.  Straightforward and sentimental. with often half-whispered vocals, it’s definitely, as the title suggests, a record that deals with more family matters, though the takeaway has little of the darkness that that twisted family portrait on the cover might suggest.
