Waves of reverb bounced off the walls of Bowery Ballroom Saturday, August 28th. Wild Nothing put out their everything as the headlining act. It was surprisingly not sold out, which is always more appealing for music savants. I looked around the room to the friends, lovers, and typical tattooed concert goers. Every eye was focused on stage.
The five piece pumped out an earnest, organic sound on a bare stage. They were staying quietly focused on recreating the sounds of their newest album, Gemeni. Moody, yet upbeat, light but unsmiling... Intricate textures and tones mixed with simple hooks made for an honest, upbeat experience.
Not far away from The Cure, The Smiths or New Order, these guys could be more carefully compared to Beach Fossils or The Pains of Being Pure at Heart. Sentimental, dreamy, nostalgic haze that makes you recall days of innocence. The sound might lead you to assume they are from the UK. You'd be wrong though, they are from the heart of the U.S. in Blacksburg, Virginia.
Lead singer Jack Tatum builds jangly, bouncy moments that echo those melancholy 80's pop bands a la Pretty in Pink. If you need an album to soundtrack your fleeting summer romance, pick up Gemeni, let the synth wash over you, and just never, never forget.
