NV's Music Video of the Week: "Casual" from Here We Go Magic

So deceptive, that Here We Go Magic. Between last year’s self titled debut, about which they spoke to us (and played a sublime sunset show) for Noisemakers on Noisevox and their latest release, Pigeons, they’ve created such waves of dreamy, delicate and rhythmic electro pop you’d hardly suspect they had a dark side. OK, sure there was a little bit of menace in the low-budg early clip for “Fangela”, which as Luke Temple told us, was a song about a “little hopping vampire”, but it was all in fun.

“Fun” however, isn’t exactly the takeaway in “Casual”. The latest from Pigeons finds our heroes in a bad way. Some sort of clinic/quarantine ward/place where stuff is happening, none of it good. I’m gonna guess they’re accident victims or it’s some sort of Ebola-type situation, because the doctors and nurses just look at em, and blood. Is. Everywhere. Dripping from noses, ears, wounds, from the top of heads, filling mouths.  All the band gets in on the act, but none more so than drummer Peter Hale, who is born, fully formed and in his altogether, blood, afterbirth, umbilical cord and all, to an older woman who collapses on the ground.

Have we reeled you in yet?  Does nudity trump blood for you?  It’s a fascinating piece, lovely song, but maybe the most “casual” thing about it is its use of blood. Directed by the Peking team of Nat Livingston Johnson and Greg Mitnick. Check out “Casual” from Here We Go Magic.
