You can only make so many journals-as-records, right? And as powerful and raw and moving as it was, Learning, the unapologetically confessional 2010 debut from Seattle's Mike Hadreas, aka Perfume Genius, was very much his story. For the follow-up, Put Your Back N 2 It, Hadreas wanted to say something a bit more universal. "I have real relationships now," he told us in an interview that you will see next week on Noisevox's Face Time, "I'm just healthier. Like my family, I talk to them and I listen to them. And I feel a lot more a part of things, rather than just so unique in my own problems, like kind of how I felt for a long time. "
Rather than at home in Seattle, he ventured to Bristol, England, to record with Drew Morgan, and in addition to piano and guitar, the two augmented the sound with cello and violin players, and even the esteemed John Parrish guests on drums. So while it's a richer sound, a fuller production, it's still got the starkness that endeared Perfume Genius to us in the first place. Standout tracks include the lovely "Take Me Home", "Dark Parts", written for Hadreas' mom, "17" a song that reminds us it doesn't always get better, and of course, "Hood", whose video footage caused a dust-up with the folks at You Tube a few weeks back, something we discuss with Hadreas, along with much more.
